Lewis Dent report, 1863 June 1.

This report, prepared by Dent for the U. S. Commission, reports the number of tillable acres on the plantation; the number, age, and sex of blacks employed; the livestock and equipment; and the names of whites residing on the plantation. The U. S. Commission was one of several U. S. Treasury Department agencies organized prior to creation of the Freedmen's Bureau to handle the leasing of abandoned plantations during the Civil War. The document indicates there were contrabands on the plantation, as reflected in Dent's statement that cattle were killed to feed them and that two U. S. Army soldiers were posted to guard the plantation, not to mention the large number of blacks reported.
